There is a new Nepalese Food Truck that I have been meaning to check out since it opened around May in Ashfield (Ashfield Park side of Ashfield), The food truck is run by a Nepalese cook and his mates, and is located at the rear of 20 Charlotte St Ashfield serving up delicious Nepalese street food. On first impression the place was clean with plenty of tables and chairs, a couple of gazebos providing shade during those sunny days, Nepalese music playing in the background and friendly service from the staff. I’ve tried other South Asian food like Indian before but never tasted Nepalese food before, so I thought I’d give my local Nepalese Food Truck a go. For entrée I had Aolu Chop which is a famous and much-loved street snack. A spiced potato croquette/fritter that is irresistibly crispy on the outside and moist on the inside., I have to say it was quite delicious, not oily, the spices gave it a kick which anyone can handle, also had a vegetable momo (Nepalese dumpling), if you’ve had Chinese dumplings before, you cannot compare it with Nepalese dumplings because it has a very different flavour altogether, it was very tasty, juicy, lightly spiced and full of flavour, the menu had other options available i.e. chicken, beef, steamed, fried, Chilli etc. For the main, I had to try out the Buff Choila (buffalo), Choila is a Newari word for meat cooked directly over the fire, it is made by spicing up grilled meat using different Nepalese spices served up with Chiura rice, which is rice that has been beaten flat and dried to preserve it, yes! It’s dried, crunchy, flattened rice. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Chiura rice but first time for everything, my only suggestion for the guys is to provide another rice option like basmati rice or red rice. The meal was very filling, and it didn’t leave me with a fiery mouth afterwards, there is a nice range of Nepalese street food available on the menu, the entrees were all under $15 and the mains were all under $20 which is great value for authentic Nepalese street food fare. Check out the photos I have posted together with the menu and general surrounding of the place.
